I attended the Meet the Candidates event hosted by The Brantford Homebuilders Association, Brant County Federation of Agriculture, Brantford Regional Real Estate Association, and the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant on September 1.  It was great meeting many of the candidates and incumbents from different wards. Some residents and members of the hosting organizations asked questions and discussed issues.

Some developers raised concerns regarding the increase in development charges assessed on each unit which impact the purchase price.  Moving forward, it will be critical to manage and assess these costs in order to provide affordable housing.

A resident raised concerns regarding their ability to sever an existing garden suite and the costs associated with its installation.  These units have been allowed under past zoning provisions and are being transitioned into the new planning process where an Additional Residential Unit (ARU) is the term used.  Applicants must be aware of the rules surrounding these types of units and need to make a fully informed decision prior to committing to such a large investment. Severances of these types of units (previous garden suites or current ARUs) are generally not permitted. The province and municipalities have initiated this provision for ARUs to address the shortfall in affordable housing.

It was interesting discussing these challenges with attendees. I look forward to addressing them if elected, and believe my experience in these matters allow an impartial and informed decision in applying planning provisions.

The Chamber of Commerce also informed all candidates of their commitment to the Elect Respect campaign.  Information on this can be found at

All organizations, businesses, and residents can embrace the values outlined there and also  take the pledge at the link provided on that site.

There will be other events hosted by some of these organizations in the near future. Stay tuned!
